You can either exchange money at home in a local bank (before you commence your journey abroad), or exchange money at the airport or hotel in the foreign land, which although it is very convenient, must be avoided, considering the high transaction fees and the worst exchange rates involved.
You can get the best exchange rates if you use your credit card, debit card or your ATM card. Although ATMs are a convenient way to obtain local currency at a reasonable exchange rate, one must be careful when using an ATM machine in a foreign land because the exact amount of fees being charged is usually not known in advance before you make the transaction.
For purchasing goods or services, you can use your credit cards, because they offer the most reasonable rates. However, the process is not transparent and you will not know how much you have been charged for the transaction until you have the credit card bill in your hands.
Traveler's checks and the new prepaid traveler's check cards are another option. Some of these like the American Express are reloadable prepaid cards for which you need to make an initial deposit of $300 and the exchange can be made in dollars, euros or pounds.
Therefore, it is advisable to find out beforehand which cards and traveler's checks are accepted at the place of your travel destination. It is also wise to keep a backup plan ready by carrying money in different forms, such as ATM cards, credit cards, a few traveler's checks, some large and small-denomination bills for exchanging or for direct purchase of goods and services.
You can also opt to pay for goods and services in dollars. However, such dynamic currency conversion, although convenient, force you to end up paying a lot more than you normally would.
